FAQs

How Much Does Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Cost?

Many patients would like to seek relief from symptoms related to hormonal imbalances. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has proven to be helpful in reducing the effects of low estrogen in women and low testosterone in men. Out of pocket cost varies depending on the treatment plan. When you come in to our office we can discuss a plan and the possible costs.

What Is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?

Bio-identical hormones have the same chemical and molecular structure as hormones that are naturally produced by the ovaries and testes. They can be used to treat and alleviate the symptoms associated with reduced estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Unlike traditional hormone replacement therapy, bio-identical hormones do not contain synthetic ingredients, some of which, have been linked to an increased risk of cancer.

Does Insurance Cover Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) requires ongoing medical care with office visits and medications. Prescription coverage varies by plan, but often patients are responsible for out of pocket costs for their treatment plans due to lack of insurance coverage.

Insurance companies may be more likely to provide in-network coverage for BHRT if the patient’s evaluated by her primary care physician or gynecologist prior to seeking treatment. Some BHRT specialists may operate as fee- for-service providers, which requires patients to pay costs upfront before applying for insurance reimbursement.

Most insurance companies will not cover bio-identical hormones from compounding pharmacies or over-the-counter medications.

Preventative BHRT Can Save Money

Patients that receive preventative BHRT can often avoid more serious and expensive medical issues in the future.  Many bio-identical hormones, including natural progesterone, estriol, and estradiol, have been linked to a reduce risk of blood clots, breast cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Additionally, Osteoporosis is one condition that can be treated proactively with bio-identical hormones.  BHRT could reduce the risk of fractures and broken bones and thereby limit associated surgeries and disability claims.

Defraying these costs can save patients, insurance companies, and society money in the long-run.

Patient Benefits

Despite the necessary costs of BHRT, its ability to alleviate patient suffering and improve quality of life is priceless.

Women that receive bio-identical hormones often report reduced hot flashes, improved mood, increased libido, and improved mental clarity. Rather than suffering in silence or self-medicating, men with low testosterone can also experience significant emotional and physical relief from BHRT.
